Morehead State Crashes Way To 94-75 Win Over Gamecocks

BOX SCORE

MOREHEAD, Ky. – A season-best night from behind the arcs and a dominant night on the glass carried Morehead State to a 94-75 win over the Jacksonville State basketball team on Thursday night.

The Ohio Valley Conference's second place team, the Eagles (16-7, 10-2 OVC) knocked down a season-high 13 3-pointers and outrebounded the Gamecocks (10-12, 6-6 OVC) by 21 boards to snap JSU's two-game winning streak and spoil its upset bid. The loss for Jax State came despite a .558 shooting percentage, but the Eagles' dominance of the boards created 19 more shots than the Gamecocks could muster.

JSU got 22 points from junior Nick Murphy and a career-high 14 points from sophomore Dominique Shellman, leading a group of four Gamecocks in double figures. Shellman, a Memphis, Tenn., native, scored all of his points in the second half, connecting on a pair of 3-pointers, while also dishing three assists. Murphy, a Bronx, N.Y., native, was 7-for-11 from the floor with 12 of JSU's 20 rebounds for his 10th career double-double and his fifth of the season.

Junior Jeremy Bynum added 15 points for JSU, while leading scorer Trenton Marshall was held to 10 on a 2-for-8 night from the field.

The OVC's Preseason Player of the Year Kenneth Faried wrapped up his 17th double-double of the year with 12 points and 11 rebounds before fouling out with 11:16 to play in the game. MSU head coach Donnie Tyndall decided to leave his best player on the floor despite early foul trouble and it cost him most of the second half.

The Eagles were able to create a 71-48 lead before their star fouled out and didn't allow JSU to make a run without him on the floor. Maze Stallworth gave them all the production they needed, scoring a season-high 26 points. The senior went 7-for-13 from the floor and 8-for-9 from the free throw line to account for half of his double-double that was completed by 11 boards.

MSU also got 18 points from Demonte Harper and 10 from Steve Peterson in the winning effort, one that saw the Eagles grab 41 rebounds to the Gamecocks' 20. The Eagles assisted 26 of their 33 makes from the field, while grabbing 17 offensive rebounds to JSU's two on the offensive glass.

Jacksonville State shot 64 percent from the floor in the first half but it MSU that controlled the game for the first 20 minutes. The Eagles, who entered the night averaging just six 3-pointers per game, were 8-for-15 from 3-point land before the half. They coupled that with a 25-7 advantage on the glass to run out to a 52-36 lead at the intermission.

Murphy led all scorers with 11 points and had six of JSU's seven rebounds in the first half, while Faried had 10 points and eight boards at the break. Terrance Hill went 3-for-5 from behind the arc for his nine points in the half, while Maze Stallworth and Steve Peterson each scored eight.

The Eagles slowly built an early 21-point lead to start the second half and never allowed the Gamecocks to get any closer than 19 the rest of the way.

Jacksonville State will move on to Richmond, Ky., where Eastern Kentucky will be waiting for a Saturday matchup that is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast live on the JSU Radio Network with Mike Parris calling the action.
