BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Jacksonville State junior Trenton Marshall has been named the Ohio Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week for the fifth time, the league office announced on Monday afternoon.

Marshall, a 6-foot-5 combo player from Garyville, La., averaged 19 points and 8.5 rebounds per game in guiding the Gamecocks (8-11, 4-5 OVC) to a 1-1 record last week, including a convincing 85-67 win over Tennessee State on ESPNU. Marshall's fifth newcomer honor of the season ties him with Courtney Bradley in 2005-06 for the most by a Gamecock in a season. During the week, he also averaged 4.5 assists and 2.5 steals per game.

A transfer from Jones Junior College in Ellisville, Miss., Marshall opened the week in the nationally televised game against the Tigers by scoring 21 points and grabbing nine boards. He also dished a career-best five assists and swiped three steals in helping the Gamecocks overcome a halftime deficit and run away with the win.

On Saturday, Marshall scored a team-best 17 points and pulled in eight rebounds in an overtime loss to Austin Peay. Despite struggling in the first half, he scored the Gamecocks' first 12 and 15 of their first 17 points of the second half to force the game into overtime. He ended the night with four assists and a pair of steals.

He currently leads the OVC in scoring at 18.5 points per game, almost two points more than Morehead State's Kenneth Faried, who is in second with 16.6 ppg. Marshall is 10th in the league in rebounding with 5.6 per game, while ranking third in steals, eighth in free throw percentage and 15th in assists.

Marshall and the Gamecocks have now received nine weekly honors from the OVC this season, the most by a JSU team since joining the league for the 2003-04 season. Marshall has five Newcomer of the Week awards and one Player of the Week honor, while Nick Murphy (2) and Jeremy Bynum have also earned Player of the Week nods.

The Gamecocks will be in action this weekend, when they close a four-game homestand at Pete Mathews Coliseum. They will take on Southeast Missouri on Thursday at 7:45 p.m., before taking on Eastern Illinois on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
