JSU Women Upend UT Martin

– Sophomore Brittany Wiley scored 19 points to lead Jacksonville State to a 63-55 win over Tennessee Martin on Saturday at the Elam Center.

Jacksonville State snapped an overall nine-game road losing streak in the process while improving to 5-12 and 2-5 in the OVC. UT Martin fell to 3-13 and 1-6 in league play.

The Skyhawks grabbed a quick 7-0 lead to begin the game and would lead until the 10:49 mark when Danielle Vaughn gave the Gamecocks a 19-18 lead.

UT Martin held a 27-24 lead before JSU went on a 7-0 run to take the lead for good. Destiny Lane tied the game with a 3-pointer before a Danielle Beneby layup gave JSU a 29-27 lead. Another Beneby basket capped the run to push the lead to 32-27.

The Gamecocks shot 51.7 percent in the first and held a 38-33 lead at halftime.

With the game tied 40-40, Jacksonville State went on a 13-4 run to take a 51-44 lead on a Wiley basket with 9:29 left in the second half. UT Martin would not get any closer than eight points the rest of the way.

Beneby followed Wiley with 11 points and had two blocks and two assists. Vaughn finished with 10 points and seven rebounds. Kelsey Johnikin led JSU with a season-high nine rebounds, one off her career-high, while Wiley registered five assists.

LaBrica Ward led all scorers with 23 points followed by Cali Cupples with 16 for the Skyhawks. Alecia Weatherly netted nine points and nine rebounds.

Jacksonville State hosts Tennessee State at 6 p.m. to begin a four-game home stand. Admission to the game is $1.
