Marshall Nets D-I Record 37 But JSU Falls at SEMO, 78-66

BOX SCORE

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Trenton Marshall put together the best scoring night by a Gamecock since 1991, but his Division I record 37 points weren't enough to pull the Jacksonville State basketball team out of a first half hole on Monday night, when Southeast Missouri took a 78-66 win.

Marshall, a native of Garyville, La., scored 28 of his points in the second half to break Jay Knowlton's Division I record of 33 that was set in the 1997-987 season. It was the highest single-game output by a Gamecock since Charles Burkette put in 37 against Athens State in 1991, a span of 522 games. His output was also the highest by an Ohio Valley Conference player this season and just the third 30-point night in the league in 2009-10.

The Redhawks (5-9, 2-2 Ohio Valley Conference) were helped through an off night at the free throw line by going to the line 45 times to get their 27 makes, a 60 percent success rate. In an equally physical game, SEMO went 20-for-35 from the charity stripe in the second half alone, while the Gamecocks (5-8, 1-2 OVC) shot just 18 free throws on the night.

Another sluggish start proved costly for the Gamecocks, who shot just 36 percent in the first half to allow the Redhawks to trudge their way to a 16-point first-half lead. Marshall went to work after JSU trailed 36-23 at the intermission, connecting on nine of his 13 second-half field goal attempts and three of his five from behind the arc, but he never could get his Gamecocks any closer than within three as they watched the Redhawks connect on just enough free throws to snap their 14-game home losing streak in league play.

Marshall was 13-for-23 on the night, while also grabbing seven boards in the loss. He was the lone JSU player in double figures, with three others, Nich Murphy, Jay-R Strowbridge and Amadou Mbodji each pitching in six. SEMO won the battle on the glass, 36-26, and shot 49 percent on their 47 field goal attempts, just two more than their shots from the free throw line.

They took advantage of 16 JSU turnovers, 12 in the first half, that led to 23 points and went 5-for-10 from behind the arc in the game.

Five Redhawks scored in double figures, with Anthony Allison leading the way with 18 on a 7-for-15 shooting night. Cameron Butler was able to find the hoop on just 12 of his 21 free throw attempts to manage 16 points. Sam Pearson grabbed a team-best seven boards to go along with his 11 points.

The Redhawks took control of the game out of the gates, building an early 18-9 lead that they would stretch to as many as 16 in the final four minutes of the first half. SEMO took advantage of 12 first half turnovers from the Gamecocks, turning them into 16 points. Jax State shot just 36 percent from the floor and was 4-for-8 in the first half from the free throw line but managed to pull to within 36-23 before the end of the half.

The Gamecocks put together a small run to start the second half and finally cut it to single digits when a Stephen Hall lay in cut the deficit to 42-34 with 14:25 remaining. Marshall's third trey of the night drew JSU within seven at 53-46 with just over 10 minutes on the clock, but back-to-back buckets from Allison pushed SEMO back out to an 11-point advantage.

JSU got no closer than six points until the final four and a half minutes, when a Marshall 3-point play tied the record and cut the deficit to 67-62. After a block on the ensuing possession, Marshall threw one down to break Knowlton's mark and cut the SEMO lead to 67-64.

The Redhawks continued to be sent to the line from that point and connected on just enough of them to hold on for the win.

The Gamecocks will return home for a pair of league games that will begin on Thursday, when Eastern Kentucky pays a visit to Pete Mathews Coliseum. The game with the Colonels will tip at 5:30 p.m., a time that has been moved since the original schedule was released. The men's game will follow the JSU women's game with EKU, which has been rescheduled for 3 p.m.
