Bynum, Marshall Earn OVC Weekly Honors For Gamecocks

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Juniors Jeremy Bynum and Trenton Marshall earned weekly honors from the Ohio Valley Conference on Monday afternoon, giving the Jacksonville State basketball team at least one weekly award in each of the last three weeks.

Bynum, a 6-foot-3 guard, was name the OVC Player of the Week, while Marshall, a 6-foot-5 combo player, earned the league's Newcomer of the Week award. Bynum earned his first Player of the Week honor after connecting on a school-record nine 3-pointers in the Gamecocks' Dec. 15 win over Norfolk State, while Marshall received his third OVC Newcomer of the Week award after notching his first career double-double in the same game.

Bynum follows junior Nick Murphy's back-to-back Player of the Week honors to give the Gamecocks the league's Player of the Week award in three-straight weeks for the first time in school history. The Oxford, Ala., native was 9-for-14 from behind the arc to score 27 points and break a four-year-old record of eight that was held by three players. He made seven of his first nine attempts from behind the arc before finally tying the mark with just under eight minutes to play. His record-breaking trey fell with just 24 ticks remaining in the game, one that also saw him grab seven rebounds.

Marshall, a native of Garyville, La., and transfer from Jones Junior College in Ellisville, Miss., earned his third OVC Newcomer honor in the past five weeks after putting in 16 points and grabbing a career-high 10 boards against the Spartans. His 18.9 points per game this season ranks second in the OVC, while his .875 free throw percentage leads the conference and ranks 14th nationally.

The Gamecocks are hosting Nicholls State tonight at Pete Mathews Coliseum to wrap up a five-game homestand before taking to the road to face Ole Miss on Dec. 29.
