Cold Shooting Gamecocks Fall To Savannah State

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. –
Jacksonville State could not shake off the affects of an 11-day lay off falling to Savannah State, 51-37, in game one of the Hampton Inn and Suites Lady Osprey Classic on Thursday.

The Gamecocks (1-8) shot 24 percent from the floor, making 12-of-50 shots that included shooting 16 percent in the first half. JSU went 1-for-21 from the floor before a Destiny Lane 3-pointer ending a 6:12 scoreless drought to start the game. JSU finished the first half four-of-25 and trailed 23-12 at the half.

Danielle Vaughn's layup to open the second half trimmed the deficit to 23-14 only to see Savannah State use a 14-0 run to take a 35-14 lead with 13:54 left in the contest.

The Tigers (8-4) later pushed the lead to as many as 27-points on a Courtney Long jumper with 11 minutes to go in the second half.

Jacksonville State held Savannah State scoreless over the final 4:44 of the contest, outscoring the Tigers 11-0 to trim the deficit to 14 points.

Jolie Efezokhae and Destiny Lane led the Gamecocks with six points apiece followed by Candice Carmine and Rebecca Meerbeek with five points. Lane, Karisma Boykin and Brittany Wiley led JSU with five rebounds each.

Crissa Jackson's 14 points led three Savannah State players in double figures. Long followed with 11 points and Kymberli Stamps added 10 points. Alisha Nelson pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds for the Tigers.

The Gamecocks take on South Carolina State on Friday at 2 p.m. in game three of the Hampton Inn and Suites Lady Osprey Classic.
