JSU's Josh Cain Named to FCS ADA Academic All-Star Team

CLEVELAND – Jacksonville State's Josh Cain was named to the Football Championship Subdivision Athletics Directors Association Academic All-Star Team were announced by the Football Championship Subdivision Athletics Directors Association (FCS ADA), today.

Cain was also announced as one of six finalist from the Academic All-Star team for the Ninth Annual FCS ADA's $5,000 postgraduate scholarship. Two student-athletes will receive postgraduate scholarships during the Association's annual membership meeting held in conjunction with the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Convention, being held at the Marriott Hotel in Anaheim, Calif., next summer.

"The FCS ADA looks forward to honoring outstanding student-athletes each year, which culminates with the annual academic all-star team announcement," said FCS ADA President Peter Fields, chair of the FCS ADA Academic All-Star Team Selection Committee and athletics director at Montana State University. "These football players that represent the true meaning of the word student-athlete and we are proud of their accomplishments both in the classroom and on the field."

Cain, who was just named first-team Academic All-America earlier this month, started all 11 games in the secondary and finished second on the team with 67 tackles after helping the Gamecock defense dominate the Ohio Valley Conference this season. In seven OVC games this season, Jax State allowed only 83 total points and ranks ninth nationally in scoring defense. JSU also lead the OVC in scoring defense, pass defense, pass defense efficiency turnover margin, opponent first downs, and opponent third down conversion.

Cain is very active in numerous organizations. His off-the-field contributions include working with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) as a team huddle leader, a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, Big Brothers/Big Sisters Program, a counselor for the Kanakuk Sports Kamps and he also has spent last summer with a medical missionary team in Tanzania, Africa.

The Wetumpka, Ala., native also has excelled in the classroom, earning his degree in Computer Science this past summer with a 3.89 grade point average. He has also rolled up numerous academic honors, including being named to the President's List, Dean's List and the OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll. He has also been awarded the Ohio Valley Conference Academic Medal of Honor, while being a representative for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and a member of the Phi Eta Sigman Honor Society and the Upsilon Pi Epsilon Honor Society.

Football players from all Football Championship Subdivision institutions are eligible for these prestigious awards. Each of the nominees were required to have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale) in undergraduate study and have been a starter or key player with legitimate athletics credentials. He must have reached his second year of athletics and academic standing at the nominated institution and have completed a minimum of one full academic year at the nominated institution. He must also have participated in 50 percent of the games played at his designated position.

A special Review Committee of Football Championship Subdivision athletics directors was responsible for selecting the all-star team and scholarship finalists. Completing this task were Greg Burke, Northwestern State; Peter Fields, Montanta State (chari); Brian Hutchinson, Morehead State; Marilyn McNeil, Monmouth; Ron Strollo, Youngstown State; Jeff Tingey, Idaho State; and Tim Van Alstine, Western Illinois.
