Small Schools Open the Southern Showcase

Southern Showcase 2020 - Small Schools - Friday, 9/18:

After being open for only a year, this Huntsville course has already proven to be one of the best in the Southeast. The NCAA Division 1 South Regional Cross Country Championship will be held here in 2021 as well as the Alabama 7A section 4, 6A section 6, 4A section 4, and 1A section 4 meets this fall season. This well-groomed course is designed to be fast with its long straightaways, 30 feet wide lanes at the narrowest, and gradual turns. It also has a near perfect ratio of elevation increase and decrease.

During the first few races of this season, heat and humidity were a big factor in athlete's performances across the state. Thankfully, on Friday, the temperature was roughly 25-30 degrees cooler with no humidity. The only real difference between Friday and Saturday was a strong headwind that directly impacted the beginning and end of the races as well as a few other long lanes.

Boys 5k Run CC Small Schools A:

The small school boys took advantage of the course's design and hit the first mile fast in a small lead pack. Into the second mile, the pack had dwindled down into half that and the course's hills which are highlighted during the second mile slowed things down a bit. Eventually Ethan Edgeworth from Cold Springs and Jake Moore from White Plains pulled away. Edgeworth and Moore battled it out until the finish line where Edgeworth beat Moore 16:36 to 16:39. The Top 10 finishers were all under 18:30.

As far as how the teams finished, White Plains beat Westminster Christian Academy by exactly 1 point for the win. White Plains finished with a 18:17 average and a 2:57 1-5 split. Westminster was just barely slower at a team average of 18:24 with a 2:28 1-5 split. Finishing third was Madison Academy with a team average of 18:57 and three points off was Cold Springs with a team average of 18:39.
