CULLMAN - Montgomery Academy, LaFayette and Marion County lead the boys' competition, and Cottage Hill Christian, Falkville and St. Bernard top the girls' divisions at the 92nd AHSAA State Outdoor Track and Field Championships for Classes 1A, 2A and 3A completed day one of the two-state meet at Cullman High School Friday.
Montgomery Academy held a slim 38-37 lead over defending boys' champion Winfield in Class 3A after Friday's events. American Christian is third with 35 points. LaFayette has a one-point lead over Cold Springs, 35-34, and Falkville is third with 27 in Class 2A. Marion County's 56 points top the 1A Boys with St. Bernard second with 49.
In the girls' divisions, Cottage Hill has 42.75 points in 3A, followed by T.R. Miller (33) and Pleasant Valley (30). Falkville's girls lead 2A with 36 points. Holy Spirit is second with 25 and Altamont, third, with 23. St. Bernard (46.50) and Whitesburg Christian (41) are 1-2 in Class 1A.
At least eight records fell Friday with more expected to come in the finals of some fierce competition Saturday.
Junior Trey Cunningham of Winfield established a new Class 3A record in the 110-meter hurdles with the top time of the prelims. He clocked 13.42 seconds, almost a half second better than his winning time of 2015 (14.18). He also qualified for the 200-meter finals with a time of 21.44, just missing the record set last year by Matthew Likely of Hillcrest-Evergreen (21.26).
On the girls' side, senior Karri Green also broke her own 3A state record in the 400-meter dash, and like Cunningham, had the fastest 2A qualifying time of the 200-meter prelims.
She won the 400 with a time of 56.59 seconds, beating her record set last year winning in 57.44 seconds.
Identical twins Cole and Conner Howell, competing for the Alabama School for the Blind, captured the crowd's hearts with exceptional performances in the para ambulatory 400-meter dash and shot put.

Javelin: Callie Jones of Cottage Hill Christian won with a 139-10 distance - breaking the record of 136-05 she set in 2015 by 3½ feet.
CLASS 1A GIRLS
400-Meter Dash (Para Ambulatory): Paige Wilson of Cedar Bluff set the 1A record in the event with a time of 1:54.70.
CLASS 3A BOYS
Shot Put: Sidney Mims of Montgomery Academy better the record he set in 2015 (47-08) with a throw of 47-10.50. However, Devonta Fuqua of Lauderdale County topped that performance with a winning throw of 48-04.75 to win the gold and set a new 3A state record.
Pole Vault: Connor Allred of Cottage Hill Christian cleared 14 feet, 3 inches to break the old record by almost a foot.
CLASS 1A BOYS
Pole Vault: Dominque Paulter of St. Bernard cleared 13 feet to set s new 1A state pole vault mark. The old record (1lea2 feet) was set by Tony McGinnis of Cedar Bluff in 2011.
400-METER DASH (Para Ambulatory): Twin brothers Cole and Conner Howell of Alabama School for the Blind clocked 1:22.73 and 1:26.94, respectively. Cole's time set the AHSAA 1A state outdoor para ambulatory record.
