Remembering Cameron Bean

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – On Monday, Sept. 21, Cameron Bean, a member of the Samford University family and former member of the Samford track & field program, passed away two days after being struck by a motorist while on an evening run in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Bean was a member of the track & field and cross country teams while attending Samford from 2005-2010 and during his time made a profound impact not only to the athletics program but to the entire Samford community.

"Cameron's death has shaken us to the core.  He was the heart and soul of the program while he was here, and he continued to support Samford track and field while running professionally with Zap Fitness." Head Coach Rod Tiffin said. "He would make it to our championship meets when he could, always providing support and the uplifting attitude that the team had come to know him for.  During his tenure here you could not find a better teammate or a person that gave more to his sport and to his team. Samford track and field has lost one of its sons, and we are all saddened by his passing."

A standout distance competitor, Bean set four school records while at Samford and helped lay the foundation for the direction that the program is headed today. During his senior year, Bean earned two SoCon Athlete of the Week honors and captured three SoCon Individual Championships along with being named the SoCon's Most Outstanding Indoor Track Performer.

Services for Cameron Bean will take place at his former high school on Saturday, Sept. 26, at The Baylor School Chapel with a visitation from 9:30 to 11 a.m. (EST) and a service to follow that will be held at 11 a.m. (EST)

A fund is being established at Samford University in Cameron's memory.  Contributions may be made in memory of Cameron Bean to Samford University, 800 Lakeshore Drive, Birmingham, AL 35229.
