On the Fast Track: Shelley Spires

Have you changed anything training wise between this year and last year? This year’s training has been very similar to last year. I’ve been trying to hit faster times in workouts and focus on my running form a little harder.

Are you satisfied with your outdoor season? I’m satisfied so far with this outdoor season but still hoping to improve by the time the State meet rolls around!

Goals for this outdoor season? My goal for high jump this outdoor season was to jump at least 5-9, but now that I’ve accomplished that I’m going for 5-10! I also want to break 44s in the 300 H and PR in the 400m with a low 57 (although a 56 would be nice).

What goes through your mind before the gun goes off?  I’m always nervous for races but prior to the gun I visualize my finish. I also know that my workouts have prepared me so I better run all out!

Do you have any superstitions when it comes to competing? I’m not a superstitious person but I do like to paint my nails a bright color before each meet!

Competition Spikes: blue and gray Nike sprint spikes and black New Balance high jump spikes

Favorite Television Show:  Law and Order

What are 3 things in your track bag you can’t live without? Biofreeze, ant type of chapstick, leg roller

What song do you always listen to before a race? If I listen to music before a race its always a song by One Direction- It’s impossible to pick just one

Beintg a top athlete in your division and a leader in the state, do you feel you have a target on your back?  I feel like all my teammates from St. Pauls have a target on their backs because we always compete hard, especially at the State Meet, and fight for every point!

You won the heptahlon last year.  Are you planning on defending your title?  I’m defiantly planning n coming back to defend my heptathlon title, I want to end my senior year with a bang!

You recently signed with the Air Force academy.  Do you plan on being a career officer?  I decided to sign with the Air Force Academy because I felt at home on every visit. I love the environment, the coaches, and all the people I’ve had the chance to meet there. My oldest brother is also an Academy grad so I’ve had my fair share of visits. I’m not sure yet what my ultimate career goal is but I’m excited to be able to graduate the Academy as an Air Force officer.

What is the best advice your coach has ever given you?  The best advice Coach Tate has ever given me is to leave it all on the track. I never want to finish a race and feel like I had something left.
