JAGUAR TRACK & FIELD CLAIMS NINE TITLES TO CONCLUDE SOUTH ALABAMA INVITATIONAL

MOBILE, Ala.
– The University of South Alabama men's and women's track and field teams earned nine victories, setting a new school record in the process, to highlight day two of the 14th Annual South Alabama Invitational at Jaguar Track Saturday.
 
Phoebe Dowson posted a new school and meet record in the women's discus with a 48.01m hurl to win the crown in that event.  It marked the second occasion this season the sophomore has surpassed her own Jaguar standard.  Bobbie Williamson earned a runner-up finish in the event with a 43.82m measure, and Morgan Jones was right behind her for third with a mark of 43.56m.
 
Jaguar runners occupied each of the top four spots in the men's 1,500-meter run, led by a victory from Michael Pienaar in a time of 3:51.46.  Patrick Rohr (second, 3:52.04), Joe Gratton (third, 3:53.56) and Justin Housley (fourth, 3:56.22) followed.  Ian Bordelon garnered another victory for the men's distance squad as he clocked in at 8:55.86 in the 3,000-meter run to top a field of 26 competitors.
 
The women's team claimed a pair of victories in the hurdle events; in the 100-meter hurdles, Noelle Jones captured the win and a new meet record with a time of 14.02 seconds.  Berta Lucas (14.19) finished in third place, while Tasha Russell (14.26) was close behind for fourth.  Marina Swanepoel won top honors in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:04.05 as Chalandra Gooden (1:07.05) was third and Ireland Armstrong (1:07.75) was fourth.
 
Spencer Anderson and Tevin Barnett combined for a 1-2 finish in the men's 400-meter hurdles; Anderson came in at 53.98 seconds for the win and Barnett followed in 54.88 seconds.  In the men's 110-meter hurdles, Tyler Agee (second, 14.58), Ravaughn Pope (third, 14.61) and Matt Dillon (fourth, 14.98) all finished among the top five.
 
Mark Watts clocked in at 47.77 seconds in the men's 400-meter dash to win top individual honors in the 16-man field.  Michael Smith finished third with a time of 49.03 seconds.  Watts also paced the Jaguar men in the 200-meter dash, coming in at 21.81 seconds for a third-place effort.
 
Jan-Louw Kotze notched a victory in the men's discus, topping the field by more than seven meters with a toss of 56.34m.
 
In the women's 4x100-meter relay, the team of Gooden, Lucas, Phillipa Van der Merwe and Melissa McCluskey crossed the line first as they combined for a time of 47.48 seconds.  McCluskey, Sara Jernfalt, Leah Hixon and Swanepoel took third in the 4x400-meter relay.  In the men's 4x100-meter relay, Smith, Barnett, Jaylon Holt and Watts teamed up to take second at 42.26 seconds; Agee, Dillon, Lezyon Legarde and Pope were third at 42.41 seconds.  In the 4x400-meter relay, Pope, Agee and Dillon teamed with Trey Clarkson for third place and a time of 3:24.73.
 
McCluskey and Van der Merwe combined for a 2-3 finish in the women's 100-meter dash, clocking in at 11.94 and 12.10 seconds, respectively.  The duo also cracked the top five in the 200-meter dash when McCluskey took fourth at 24.66 seconds and Van der Merwe was fifth at 24.72 seconds.
 
The Lady Jags placed four individuals in the top six on the 800-meter run, led by Tori Lawson's runner-up time of 2:16.30.  Nicole Durham (fourth, 2:19.20), Alivia Bryars (fifth, 2:20.53) and Joanna McCoy (sixth, 2:21.18) also represented USA.  Shannen Weyer clocked a time of 5:01.30 in the women's 1,500-meter run to take third place.
 
Hixon earned a second-place finish in the women's javelin as the senior registered a 44.44m throw.  Ashton Pennington captured fifth place overall with a top mark of 40.26m.
 
Robert Mann was the top USA finisher in the men's 800-meter run, recording a time of 1:56.12 for third; Cameron Ellis came in at 1:58.61 to take fifth.
 
Holt was the lone representative for the Jaguars in the men's high jump, recording a top leap of 2.01m to finish third overall.
 
In the women's jumps, Kaitlyn Beans paced the Jags with a pair of fourth-place finishes in the high jump (1.59m) and long jump (5.75m). Jasmine Ferguson was fifth in the high jump with a 1.59m clearance as well.  Armstrong was the top Jaguar finisher in the women's pole vault when she posted a clearance of 3.70 to place sixth overall.
 
Robert King (56.13m) and Charles Collins (51.36m) finished fourth and sixth, respectively, as they represented the Jaguar men's team in the javelin.
 
"We feel like we're starting to really show what we can do," said head track and field coach Paul Brueske.  "We're making some really good progress across the board.  We've certainly still got some things we need to continue to work on, but I think we're getting better each meet.
 
"We had beautiful weather and great conditions today, and I think the entire meet ran very smoothly; I'm very pleased with the way everything turned out this weekend.  For the most part, I thought the guys went out and competed really hard, and we had a lot of really good performances.  Overall, I'm just really pleased with the progress of the program right now."
