Salute to Seniors: Adam Benefield, Haleyville High School

What was your most memorable meet?
Cross country: The 2012 "Dew It On the Trails" meet, It was my race of the season where everything seemed to come together.I dropped my personal best from 17:49, to 17:26 for 3rd place.    Track: The 2013 State Meet, I competed in the 4A 1600 and the 800. I really had a mental and physical breakthrough, I ran a personal best in both 4:44 in the 1600 for 7th place, and 2:06 in the 800 for 5th place. I really feel like I learned to use the nervous energy from big races to help my performance instead of hurt it.

Where did you face your biggest competition?
Sectionals and State in both Cross Country and Track, where the states best runners go head to head, always super competitive!

Out of all of your high school accomplishments which stands out the most?
4A All State honors my 12th, and 10th grade cross country season.

If you could do it all over again what would you change about your running career in high school?
I don't think I would change anything I am thankful for how things worked out, I believe God had a plan for my high school running career, and I believe he does my college career as well.

What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?
Severe tendonitis in my left knee the summer before my junior cross country season, I wasn't able to run for almost three months. Even though it was extremely difficult to go through, I believe it gave me a renewed sense of determination to reach my goals and made me thankful for every step I run.

What will you miss the most?
My awesome team mates and coaches! I have developed some awesome friendships, and girlfriend, through cross country and track and field that I will cherish forever.

Do you have any advice for younger athletes?
Dream big, work your tail off, and always believe in yourself!

What are your post-highschool or college plans?
I will be attending and running cross country at the University of North Alabama.

Who would you like to say thank you to?
I would like to thank my family, for always being supportive of my running goals and very encouraging. My coaches throughout my high school career, they have been such a blessing in my life and I wouldn't be where I am without them . All of my teammates and training partners who have always pushed me to be my very best,  in running and everyday life. and most importantly, thank God for allowing me to run and the opportunity to continue my running career as a UNA Lion.
