Senior Augie Funk of Foley HS, Foley AL, dispensed with the field and
led wire to wire on the 3 mi flat & fast course to win the varsity boys
race in 15:57.74. Junior Daniel Friedline of Murphy HS, Mobile, seconded
in 16:27.32 and sophomore Todd McCarty of McGill-Toolen, Mobile, AL, was
third in 16:42.48. McGill-Toolen bested the other Mobile area schools
for the boys team title.
The 3 mi varsity girls race turned tactical in the last 800 meters as
the lead pack of 4 runners tried to time their kicks to pull away from
the rest. Freshman Elizabeth Waniowicz of McGill-Toolen got it right and
won in 19:17.47. Murphy senior Leslie Davis seconded in 19:21.01 and
senior Lauren Floyd of Baker HS, Mobile, was third in 19:25.18.
McGill-Toolen nipped Murphy 42-45 to take the varsity girls team title
and give coach Angelo Harris a sweep for his 51st birthday.
