Mountain Brook\'s Patrick Claybon, last year\'s runner-up in the state high school decathlon, holds a 27-point lead over Arab\'s Cade Laney after Monday\'s first day of competition at Mountain Brook.

In the heptathlon, Kelly Gaston of Montgomery\'s Robert E. Lee leads Lauren Johnson of Scottsboro by 91 points.

Last year\'s heptathlon champion, Edra Finley of UMS-Wright, was third.

The Spartans\' Claybon finished the 100 meters, high jump, shot put, long jump and 400 meters with a total of 3,253 points. Laney followed at 3,228 and Daniel Nolan of Scottsboro was third with 3,172 points.

Gaston notched 2,776 points in the 100-meter hurdles, discus, high jump and 200 meters. Johnson trailed with 2,685 and Finley had 2,229.

Besides Claybon, Mountain Brook coach Greg Echols said Laney\'s performance was probably the most notable. Laney wasn\'t considered one of the favorites going in.

\"Laney was a surprise,\" he said. \"He\'s doing really well.\"

Performances in the girls heptathlon classes went about as expected, Echols said.

\"At this point, there are no surprises in the girls division,\" said Echols.

Final events begin today at 9 a.m. for boys, 10 a.m. for the girls.

Events to come in the decathlon are the 110-meter hurdles, pole vault, discus, triple jump and 1500-meter run.

Final-day competition in the heptathlon consist of the 800-meter run, long jump and shot put.
