Lady Hornets Lead SWAC Indoor Championship after Day One

BATON ROUGE, La.—The Alabama State University Lady Hornets gathered 56 points on the opening day of the Southwestern Athletic Conference Indoor Championship and lead second-place Arkansas-Pine Bluff by 33 points heading into tomorrow's final day of competition.

Kesia Derilus led the way by winning the 3000 meter run in a time of 10:50.10. Reheema Hodges finished seventh in the event to gain the Lady Hornets another two points.

ASU picked up 22 points in the high jump with Tyrisha Chambers, Tanisha Boulware and Asha Tavernier finishing 2-3-4 in the event. Jahneel Tyrell had a sixth-place finish in the event.

The Lady Hornets also had two top-five finishes in the shot put with Shanice Mells finishing fourth and Melissa Romelus finishing fifth. Asha Tavernier finished fourth in the long jump and the relay team consisting of Courtney Gooch, Lutrisha Altidor, Soyong Smith and Raheema Hodges finished third in the distance medley.

The ASU men earned 8.33 points on the first day of competition and will enter the second day of events in eighth place.

ASU earned eight points with a second place finish in the distance relay. The participants were Charles Flewellen, Jonathan Franklin, Delorean Peek and Christopher Duncan.

The .33 points came from Isiah Golson's eighth place finish in the high jump.
