Jax State Tennis Wraps Up Competition At USTA/ITA Southern Regionals

JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State men's and women's tennis team wrapped up competition at the USTA/ITA Southern Regionals this weekend in Birmingham and Tuscaloosa.

The women's event was hosted by Samford University, while the men's venue was held at the University of Alabama.

On the women's side, Raphaela Lima advanced to the round of 16 with a win over Louisiana-Lafayette's Hannah Appleyard after receiving an opening round bye of Draw B. Lima fell to Jessica Diamond of Samford in a three-set marathon, 6-3, 6-4, 7-5. JSU's Rafaela Wenzel dropped her opening match of Draw B to Mia Gordon of ULL. Wenzel rebounded in the consolation bracket as she reached the final eight. She won in straight sets in the round of 16 over Hayley Everett of LSU. Kelly Tomlin fell to the consolation draw after dropping her first match of the weekend. Tomlin was edged by Elizabeth Hall of Mississippi State, 7-6, 7-6 in the consolation bracket.

In Tuscaloosa, sophomore Felipe Watanabe ousted UAB's James Gardner in the consolation bracket round of 32 in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. Watanabe fell to Daniel Moser of UAB in the next round of competition. JSU's Axel Sundberg also reached the round of 16 with a pair of wins in the consolation bracket. Sundberg topped Sami Ghorbel of Troy and Elliott Minvielle of ULL.

The Gamecock women return to action next weekend, taking part in the Southern Miss Fall Invitational in Hattiesburg, Miss. The Jax State men will continue the fall season on Nov. 5-7 at the Murray State Invitational.
