Gamecock Women Claim JSU Foothills Title; Jax State Men Finish Third

OXFORD, Ala. – The Jacksonville State cross country team turned in an impressive showing at its own meet on Saturday as the Gamecocks claimed the women's title of the 5th Annual JSU Foothills Invitational.

The Jax State men claimed bronze in 8K at the Oxford Lake & Recreation Center.

Individually, the JSU women took home the top-three spots and turned in 38 team points in the 5K. Sophomore Ericka Stam claimed the individual crown with a time of 18 minutes, 20.44 seconds. It marked the third top-five finish of the season for the Keller, Texas native. Kevyn Tracy and Ashley Stovall finished just behind Stam with marks of 18:59.47 and 19:05.01 respectively. Kailey Jensen and Latasha Sturkie rounded out the Jax State team score as Jensen turned in a time of 20:15.67 to finish 17th, while Sturkie crossed the finish line at 20:25.11 to claim the 19th spot individually.

On the men's side, Matt Brick was the top Gamecock as he finished fourth with a mark of 26:43.29. Nicolas Tirop finished eighth with a time of 27:31.06. Junior Norman Steigler clocked a time of 28:41.76 to card a 23rd-place finish. Bethuel Kiplagat and Josh Hulsey finished 28th and 29th respectively with times of 29:03.68 and 29:10.50 to round out the team score of 74 points.

Emory University finished runner up behind the JSU women, followed by West Alabama, Montevallo and Huntingdon.

UWA claimed the men's 8K with 44 points. The Tigers posted five top-20 individual finishes to lead them to the team title.

After three straight weeks of competition, the Gamecocks will break until Oct. 22 as they participate in the Kennesaw State Owls Invitational. The KSU meet will be a tune up for the Ohio Valley Conference Championship that will take place the following weekend in Nashville, Tenn.
