Shonbaum, Berlin Lead Gamecocks on First Day of Fall Season

ROUND TWO RESULTS

FLORENCE, S.C. – Sophomore Andres Schonbaum and junior Gonzalo Berlin each finished Monday at six-under par to tie for second and put the Jacksonville State men's golf team to third after the first day of the Spring Hill Suites Intercollegiate.

In their first tournament of the season, the Gamecocks turned in a 288 in the morning round before firing a 284 to close the day one shot behind Chattanooga in second and 10 shots behind leader Georgia College in the 15-team field. They will play the final 18 holes of the 54-hole tournament on Tuesday morning at the 7,062-yard Country Club of South Carolina.

Schonbaum and Berlin each carded three-under 69s in each of the first and second rounds to enter the final round as part of a five-player tie for second in the 79-player field. Schonbaum, a native of Cordoba, Argentina, turned in 10 birdies, which tied for the third-highest total in the field through the first 36 holes. Berlin, a native of Brasilia, Brazil, carded nine birdies to earn a spot in the tie for second, three shots behind leader Chris Robb of Chattanooga.

Junior Tom Robson (71-73) shot an even-par 144 and is tied for 18th after the opening day of the fall season. The Portsmouth, England, native also made 10 of the Gamecocks' 32 birdies on the day, the third-highest total in the field.

Freshman Matthew Wallace wrapped up the scoring for the Gamecocks, bouncing back from an opening round 79 to card a one-over 73 in the afternoon. The London native is tied for 57th, while fellow freshman Dorian Fernandez (82-79-161) rounded out the Gamecocks' lineup.

The Gamecocks hold a two-shot advantage over fourth-place Georgia Southern, while Samford and Furman are tied for fifth, six shots behind JSU.
