Gamecock Soccer Faces Mississippi Valley State, Jackson State This Weekend

JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State's women's soccer team will travel across the state line into the state of Mississippi in search of its first win of the season as it takes on Mississippi Valley State on Friday and closing out the weekend against Jackson State.

The JSU-MVSU match time is now set for 7 p.m. rather than the original start time of 4 p.m. in Itta Bena, Miss. The Gamecocks and Tigers of JSU will square off at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

This weekend closes out a four-match road trip for Jax State as the squad ventured out West last weekend to New Mexico. JSU dropped a pair of hard fought matches to New Mexico State and North Texas in the NMSU-hosted Hotel Encanto Aggie Classic.

Junior forward Chelsea Pelletier leads the Gamecock offensive charge with nine shots on the season, six coming on goal. The Fort Worth, Texas-product ranks among the leaders in the Ohio Valley Conference in total shots. She tallied a new career-best in shots in a game with six attempts against New Mexico State. JSU goalkeeper Ali Koenig was honored by the OVC for her performance last weekend as she was named Co-Goalkeeper of the Week. In the last two matches, Koenig turned in 18 stops in 135 minutes in the net. In the North Texas match last Sunday, the Colleyville, Texas-sophomore finished with ten stops. On the season, Koenig is tops in the OVC in saves with 30 and averages 7.50 stops per match. She also ranks fourth in the league in save percentage (.811).

Friday's meeting with the Devilettes will be the fourth all time between the two schools with the Gamecocks claiming the previous three contests. JSU has not surrendered a goal to MVSU in those three meetings. Last season, Jax State cruised to a 4-0 win over the Green and White in Jacksonville. MVSU enters the weekend 0-4 on the season after falling to Southern Miss in its last outing. Sunday's battle between the JSU's will be the first meeting on the pitch. The Tigers of JSU (1-1) will face Nicholls State on Friday prior to taking on the Gamecocks.

Following its trip to the Magnolia State, JSU returns home to host the 2nd Annual Adidas/JSU Gamecock Classic on Sept. 10 & 12. The Gamecocks will face their third-straight opponent from the Southwestern Athletic Conference as Southern University will be Friday's opposition on the opening day of the event. Match time is set for 7:30 p.m. OVC rival Austin Peay and Southeastern Louisiana will tangle in the opening match at 5:30 p.m.
