ASU Men Finish Third at SWAC Track & Field Championships

Hornets finished 3rd following strong final day push

NEW ORLEANS –
The Alabama State University men's track and field team tallied 111 points en route to finishing tied for third with Jackson State at the 2010 SWAC Track & Field Championships held at Tad Gormley Stadium.

The Hornets climbed two spots on the final day behind several strong performances including a trio of individual event titles. Grambling State captured the team championship with a total of 135.50 points followed by Arkansas-Pine Bluff with 120.

Senior Robert Gunn closed his SWAC career with a first-place finish in the 1,500m running a time of 3:55.25. Jonathan Franklin finished the 400m in a time of 47.56 on his way to a first-place finish. Delorean Peek won the 800m with a 1:55.40 and led a quartet of point scorers for ASU in the event as Gunn (4th), Charles Flewellen (5th) and Christopher Duncan (6th) all competed in the final heat.

Beldon Ferguson nearly captured the 110m hurdles finishing second by just three one-hundredths of a second while Isaiah Golson earned a second-place finish in the high jump with a leap of 6'06”. Bama State's 4x400m relay squad consisting of Peek, Flewellen, Franklin and Vincent Butler also earned a runner-up finish after racing to a time of 3:10.11.

Any athlete that finished first or second in the event finals at the SWAC Championship garnered All-SWAC honors.

The 2010 SWAC Track and Field Championships marked the end of the regular season for the ASU men's squad. Several athletes will compete at the Georgia Tech Invitational on May 14 with hopes of posting a qualifying mark for the NCAA East Regional on May 27-29 in Greensboro, N.C.
