Sam Affolder To Transfer to Loudoun Valley Next Season

Loudoun Valley (Va.) High, the defending Virginia High School League Class 4A champions in cross country and runner-ups in track and field, will be adding a huge talent to its boys distance squad next school year. 

Sam Affolder, a Carlisle (Pa.) High sophomore who was second at the Foot Locker Northeast Regional during cross country season and a member on the Thundering Herd's national record in the DMR at New Balance Nationals Indoor in March, will be transferring to the Purcellville school following his final semester with Carlisle. The news was first reported by Pennlive.com

Affolder, the brother of Syracuse signee Noah Affolder, has a PR of 4:09.89 in the mile, 1:56.26 in the 800m and 9:52.02 in the 3200m. He was a Foot Locker Cross Country Nationals Qualifier and a winner of the boys mile at the Hispanic Games in 2016. The Carlisle boys ran a national record of 9:56.18 in the DMR in March. Affolder was the team's first leg and ran a split of 3:02.11 in the 1200m. 

The transfer will be Affolder's third in three years. 


Loudoun Valley, which is coached by Joan and Marc Hunter, is the former program of Drew Hunter, who became the the ninth high school boy to break 4-minutes in the mile at the Armory Track Invitational in February of 2016 and later scored an indoor national record in the event with a time of 3:57.81 at the Millrose Games. He later turned pro in July with Adidas.

Affolder's father is a logistics officer the Army and recently accepted a position at The Pentagon following his time at the United States Army War College. His family scouted several schools in the Virginia area, but settled on Loudoun Valley after speaking with the Hunter's, according to Pennlive. 

The Affolder family has lived in eight states, including stints in New York, Illinois and Alaska, and likely will be in the Virginia area for at least two years.
