Senior Sendoff - Elise Sheldrick - James Clemens High School

Athlete Name: Elise Sheldrick

School: James Clemens High School

What was your most memorable meet and why?
My most memorable meet was the Brooks Memphis Twilight Classic in the 2014 cross country season. It was my first race with the James Clemens cross country team since I moved from Mississippi. It my first experience at a large meet with lots of competition, and it opened my eyes to see what a competitive runner I am!

Where did you face your biggest competition?
I faced my biggest competition at the section track meet this season. I had the opportunity to be qualified for the 800 meter run at states but I had to get 5th place or higher against the fastest girls in north Alabama. I was so nervous but I pushed and worked hard and I ended up competing at the state track meet in my favorite event.

Out of all of your high school accomplishments which stands out the most and why?
I think learning more about myself and gaining confidence was one of the hugest accomplishments in my high school career. I was very shy at the beginning of high school, but as I went on I opened up through sports, school clubs, and friends. I soon learned about my leadership skills and I gained confidence in my self as a bright and cheerful young woman.

If you could do it all over again what would you change about your running career in high school?
Absolutely nothing! I am so blessed to be apart of two great teams at Saint Joseph Catholic High school and James Clemens! Both schools taught me that I could accomplish anything that I put my heart and mind into.

What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?
My biggest obstacle was definitely moving from Mississippi to Alabama. I use to compete in a division 2A school and I moved up to a 7A high school. I had to leave some of my close friends behind in my home state and make new friends. But, this move helped me to develop into the strong and competitive athlete I am today.

What will you miss the most?
I will miss the awesome pasta parties, fun trips to meets, and all the James Clemens coaches and teammates I've had.

Do you have any advice for younger athletes?
You can do anything! Always know that you are special in your own thoughts and talents. If you face an obstacle in life don't be afraid to conquer them to reach for your goals and dreams!

What are your post-highschool or college plans?
I will be attending Auburn University to study to become a nurse.

Who would you like to say thank you to?
I want to say thank you to my family- my mom, dad, and brother Aj- for always encouraging me and loving me no matter what. Also special thank you to Coach Bell and the whole James Clemens coaching staff for believing in me when I moved to Alabama, and saying that I can reach my goals and dreams. Shout out to the James Clemens track and cross county teams for being such great friends and teammates these past two years and always being there for me!
