McDonough & Strozier win Montevallo. Good Performances Despite Lightning Delays

The Montevalo Early Bird Twilight Classic has become the biggest opening weekend meet in Alabama. Despite several delays due to lightning, may racers ran fantastic early season times.

Mary Grace Strozier (pelham) who took 2nd in the large school division last year took the top spot this year in a combined division race that began at 9:20pm. Meet management had made a decision to combine the Purple and Gold divisions to make up for close to two hours of rain delay. As the race began Strozier moved out front early and by the 2mi mark had added 20 seconds to her lead.

Just behind Stroizer was Presley Weems (Hoover) who ran her first sub-20min 5K last night (19:39). Weems who is considered to be more of a mid-distance is expected to play a huge part on the Hoover squad this year.

Hoover Girls won the night with an impressive 48 points. Vestavia was right behind them with 64 points. Most impressive about Vestavia was a 59 second split between their 1st and 5th runners.


Tommy McDonough (Hoover) repeated this year as the individual winner for the boys. McDonough who won in 16:50 last year had the performance of the night running 15:58 for the first sub 16min performance of the season.

American Christian's Noah Karr PRd running 16:45 for 2nd place last night. This will put him as the runner to beat in 3A after this weekend's performances.

Hoover Boys took 1st place for teams results for a school sweep with an impressive 35 points. Behind Hoover was American Christian Academy who scored 100 points and finished ahead of many larger programs.
