Matthew Maton US #3 All-Time 3:42.54 1500 at Oregon Relays!

Matthew Maton, a senior at Summit High School in Oregon, broke another high school state record previously held by Galen Rupp (took down Rupp's state cross country course record this fall), with a remarkable US #3 all-time 1500 meter performance of 3:42.54 racing against collegiates and pros at the Oregon Relays on Friday night! Only two truly all-time great names, Alan Webb at 3:38.26 from 2001 and Jim Ryun at 3:39.0 from 1964, have run faster than Maton at the 1500 meter distance while in high school.

Maton, who was kicked off his high school team this spring after a falling out with the coaching staff, appears to be thriving in the opportunity to run unattached in high quality and competitive collegiate meets now, before he competes in elite post-season high school races in June with the adidas Dream Mile and Brooks PR Invite. With his 1500 performance converting to a 3:58.9 1600 and 4:00.28 mile approximately, Maton along with the nation's other top returning prep miler in Grant Fisher of Grand Blanc, Michigan certainly have a great shot in the right race and conditions to join a short list of past sub 4 minute high school milers in United States history.

The 1500 race was especially meaningful for Maton coming on his future home track at the University of Oregon. Maton finished 4th in his 1500 heat behind former University of Oregon star Mac Fleet (3:40.52) and future Ducks teammate Blake Haney (3:42.34). To top off the stellar evening for the Maton household, Maton's older sister Ashley, a current University of Oregon distance runner, set a new PR in the 5K at 16:30. What will Matthew Maton do next? We are only in mid-April!
