NEW MARKET, Ala. –
The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's cross country team started the 2013 campaign in terrific fashion on a gorgeous Saturday morning at Sharon Johnston Park, using a strong all-around effort to claim the Fleet Feet Sports/Earl Jacoby Memorial Invitational title.

Junior Vicky Winslow led the Blue and White as she captured the top spot among non-Division I runners, clocking in with a stellar time of 18:08.6 to set a new career-best time in the 5 K. She smashed her old previous top time which was 18:17.44.

Winslow's performance helped the Lady Chargers total just 16 points on the day, and Clayton State finished a distant second with 64 points.

The rest of the top five of the non-Division I schools was completed by Birmingham-Southern (77 points), North Alabama (90 points) and Delta State (109 points). Austin Peay led the Division I teams with 23 points, while Evansville totaled 33.

Sophomore Kasey Spence posted a strong 19:05.1 to finish second in the Division II/III field, and she was followed by Kailey Williams who ran to a 19:08.9 time in the freshman's first-ever collegiate race. Providing UAH with the top four runners, Michelle Kruse clocked in at 19:12.1 to place fourth, and the scorers for the Lady Chargers were rounded by Kayla Luechtefield who placed sixth with a 19:33.2 showing.

That mark for Luechtefield was more than 45 seconds better than her previous best mark of 20:15.30.

Amber Powell (19th, 20:52.4), Alison Jay (24th, 21:12.0), Anna Scarlett (33rd, 21:47.0), Katie Brakke (40th, 22:42.2) and Katelyn Clarke (49th, 23:39.2), all also ran solid times for the Lady Chargers on the day.

The Lady Chargers will return to the line next Saturday, Sept. 21, as they head to Rock Hill, S.C., for the Winthrop Invitational.
